A turbocharger uses exhaust gas energy to spin the turbine wheel, which drives the compressor wheel on the intake side. This forces more air into the cylinders, allowing the engine to burn fuel more efficiently and produce greater power. In operation, the turbo shaft can spin at several hundred thousand RPM while enduring exhaust temperatures of around 900°C to 1000°C. Even when under vacuum conditions, the turbine continues to rotate.
